You could certainly use one or the other. Dan likes to add them both because they do taste a little different. He says adding them both creates depth. This is an excellent recipe. I used agave syrup rather than simple syrup and a slightly smaller amount. I also used Cointreu rather than Triple Sec because that was what I had. I turned out great.
