If you are planning a trip here, the Big Island is not to be missed. Getting to the Big Island from any other Hawaiian island is pretty straightforward. Both of the major airports here are a short minute flight from Honolulu. If you are headed to a northern destination like Kohala or Waimea, either option on Hawaii island will be about the same distance away. KOA is just north of the town of Kailua-Kona, a great starting point for your stay. ITO has two runways, a large terminal, and easy access to Hilo and the surrounding areas.

Actually there are two, Kona International Airport (KOA) on the west side of the island, and Hilo International Airport (ITO) on the east side. These are the advantages of staying on the Kona side. However, the downside is that all you get to do on Kona side west are to sit on the beach, swim, and watch sunset. On the east side, you have mountains, volcanoes, waterfalls and beaches.
If your goal is to do a lot of sightseeing and see beautiful sights that the Big Island has to offer, the east side is your best friend. Akaka Falls is one of the more popular waterfalls on the East side of the island. What we suggest you to do to make the most out of your vacation here on the Big Island is to stay one or two nights in Kona to get the tourist Hawaiian vibe and the rest of your time on the east side of the island.

Just keep in mind that it takes about 2 hours or more to drive from Kona side to Hilo side. For instance, if you fly into Hilo Airport east side , spend a few days on the east side, then spend a few days on the west side, you will have to account for 2 hours of driving back to the Hilo Airport from the west side.
